Doug Henwood’s Picks

WOODBINE SB PICKS FOR FRIDAY

DOUG HENWOOD’S PICKS (The NumberCruncher)

 Race 1

6-10-7-5

(#6) JOSES TRIPLETS – It’s another Friday night, handicapping the best harness race track in the world!…that’s Mohawk, of course!  R1 gets the night going on a tricky foot with no one jumping out and several with potential shots to get it done.  I’m going to play the speed in here, #6 JOSES TRIPLETS.  Shows a 56.1 front half on Mar 21, with JR Plante doing the driving.  That  speed number is best by over 2 seconds so it’s perhaps the key stat on the program.  Last race was really not bad coming off the vet scratch sick & Plante is a great choice to get JOSES TRIPLETS involved early again.  Should be a good price.  Note I’ll take 6,7 & 10 for the EP5.

Race 2

6-4-1-5

(#6) LETS N JOY N – I’ve said it a few times lately that when a successful closer starts to have the same success from the front-end, we better be taking notice.  It’s an obvious sign we are looking at a standardbred in TOP form.  Let’s face it, since arriving from down under, LETS N JOY N has been great no matter how she’s been raced but last time right here against F&M Open company she was able to lead all the way instead of relying on her obvious closing abilities.  From that one we get the best front half speed number for the group (55.3) & 2 starts back we’ve got a 26.3 adjusted closing quarter which is 2nd only to #4 ABSOLUTION & her 26.1 coming from the same race.  It a wonderful group of mares but I’m looking for LETS N JOY N to repeat.

Race 3

3-7-10-6

(#3) KOBRA KATE – on the broadcast we hear almost every week from the hall of famer, Randy Waples that #3 KOBRA KATE is a handful.  That may be true but lately it’s sure not showing up in the results column. She’s been consistent & slowly getting better & last race showed us all a 26 flat adjusted closing quarter, the top mark for this group.  PIPERS LUNA is showing she’s the horse they thought she was when they shipped her in from Manitoba & of course NO BETTER AIR & NAUGHTY DELIGHT were solid 2 year olds.  I like them all but I’ll take KOBRA KATE in search of a big payday.
Race 4

7-9-2-5

(#7) REDLAND SAPHIRE – found a spot over at Western Fair to start the year right and she did not disappoint in scoring by 3 lengths.  Two 2025 starts were OK so this may be a decent enough horse or at least certainly good enough to take down an average looking bunch of NW1 here at “The Hawk”.  That 28 flat adjusted closing quarter from Sept 30 last year puts her right there with the best in here so I’ll stick with my angle instead of backing the likely favourite PEARL WASH who will have to deal with the 9 hole again tonight in start #2.
Race 5
10-3-4-2

(#10)  PANIC RAY- been looking really good in his last 3 & that ties in with 3 drives in a row from  the very talented Louis Philippe Roy.  Offers us the best speed for the group (56.2) and posts the 2nd best adjusted closing quarter, a 27 flat, which is 2nd to only #3 WINDSUN GUNNER.  That one certainly looms as the danger but I like the grit I’ve been seeing in PANIC RAY lately as well.  I’ll take them both in my multi-leg bets but for me it’s “RAY” on top.

Race 6
8-5-3-2
(#8) DOUBLE DIPPIN – had him last week from the rail in Leg 1 of this POP-UP Series & still like him even though he’s drawn the outside post tonight.  Been racing well & shows us a group-best 57.3 speed number then his 27.4 adjusted closing quarter (coming from his last race) rates 2nd only to the series newcomer #5 THE BEAR A CUDA & his 27.2.  No matter, I’m looking to Double Dip on DOUBLE DIPPIN.

Race 7

2-9-10-6

(#2) PLAY DATE – raced good enough in her debut last week & her last quarter from that one usable race has her on top with a 26.4 adjusted closing quarter. The main competition seems to have landed on the outside of the gate so I’m looking for new driver LPR to sit close & potentially be on the move with one of his patented back stretch brush moves.  Should improve off that first race.

Race 8
10-4-7-1

(#10) SETTN A PRECEDENT – tough post but loaded with back-class, especially when competing at this low level.  Shows the best speed for the group (55.3) & one of our best drivers able to utilize it in Doug McNair.   A competitive adjusted closing quarter too (27.2) so if McNair is able to get across & get good position, all will be well.

Race 9
6-5-3-4

(#6) GOOBER SMACK – been enjoying these POP-UP events & has filled his bank account going 4/8 so far here in 2026.  That last effort generated a 27.3 adjusted closing quarter which is clearly the best closing number for this group. Not much else to fear in here either so it looks like another POP-UP Elimination win for GOOBER SMACK to me.

Race 10
2-3-5-6

(#2) TH SUMMER LOVIN – looks like McNair had her going just a bit too fast early in that last one (26 flat to the quarter).  Post 7 will have you do that sort of thing but tonight with post 2 it’s much more likely we’ll save some of that speed & search for a 2 or 3 hole spot at the turn.  These are easier too so it wouldn’t surprise me to see McNair brush to the front down the backstretch & overall that would have TH SUMMER LOVIN in a much better situation than last race.  She can close too (see that Apr 11 effort) so McNair will have options.  Looks like the one to beat with the drop & the draw.

Race 11
6-3-9-4-5
(#6) SAULSBROOK ROLO – showed a little more speed in her last and tons of grit.  She was not conceding defeat to hyped-horse SANGRIA SUMMER & she almost dug in to win.  It was impressive none the less & the effort generated a 26.2 adjusted closing quarter which ties with #3 A BETS A BET & #4 MALICIA SPEED.  It’s the 5th start into her season & she’s capable of getting that first win tonight.

Most Likely: R9 – #6 GOOBER SMACK

Value Play: R11 – #6 SAULSBROOK ROLO

Deep Crunch: R3 #3 KOBRA KATE
