Doug Henwood's Picks

Race 1

3-2-5-10

(#3) LOU WHO – Saturday night at “The Hawk” sounds great to me!  11 tricky races to test us so let’s grab our thinking caps & get to it.  Here in Race 1, LOU WHO has been a consistent closer since dropping out of OSS action in September.  He won’t be near the front but does show the best speed number in here (56.3) and he’s tied with #2 LATE FOR COFFEE as best closer with a 27.4.  Owner/Trainer/Driver Steve Hudon has this one going well & with this decent post & 8-1 ML he’s my top choice in here.

Race 2

1-3-5-7

(#1) BRUNO NO NO NO – gotta like BRUNO in this spot.  Shows 2 great starts in a row, brings 2nd best speed to get good position (55.0) & tied as 2nd best closer with a 26.4.  SHANES DREAM actually posts the best closing number with a 26.2 from Nov 2.  Moving up here so I’ve backed him off to my 3rd pick.  BRUNO should be able to get the jump on the other key closer #3 RIPASSO so based on being in top form, for me, its BRUNO YES YES YES tonight.

Race 3

2-5-7-1

(#2) PA SALT – shows best speed # in here with a 55.3 & Doug McNair returns for the drive so that will all but guarantee an aggressive steer tonight.  Wired a similar group last week so why not again?

Race 4

8-3-4-2

(#8) ODDS ON CAPITALISM – taking a stand on his Nov 8 start which featured a +4 middle move followed by a 27 flat adjusted closing quarter.  That closing quarter is best for these so perhaps J-Mac can coax the best out of ODDS ON CAPITALISM & get the job done.  That’s a beauty of a first start back at Mohawk by #3 CONTROL THE POWER so I’ll add him to all my multi-leg plays

Race 5

4-3-7-6

(#4) LEGION SEELSTER – gets some post relief here &remains almost at the bottom of the condition ladder.  The numbers say he’s 2nd best speed (55.3), flashed a +5 ½ middle move (Nov 8) & has 2nd best closer status based on that 27.1 adjusted closing quarter taken also on Nov 8.  6-1 ML would be mighty fine.

Race 6
1-3-5-7
(#1) JAYPORT CASH – here’s the first of 2 Harvest Series finals featuring the top talent from the prelims which took place the last 2 weeks. JAYPORT CASH crushed his division last week from Post 9 so he should enjoy the positive post relief.  His 27.2 adjusted closing quarter 2 starts back is the best in here.  Should have a big shot at the bigger money ($47,200).

Race 7

7-6-4-3

(#7) COLD CREEK QUESO – drops after 4 “OK” starts against OPEN company.  Showed us a 26.3 adjusted closing quarter Nov 1, the same race he used a +6 ½ middle move to improve position.  Prior to that we see a 26 flat closing quarter (adjusted) on Oct 11.  Both of those last quarters would be tops in here so he looks pretty good against this reduced competition.

Race 8

4-2-1-5

(#4) FIGMENT – here’s the other Harvest Series final, this time for 3YO C&G Pacers.  FIGMENT looks like a stand-out even though he missed last week’s 2nd leg of the series.  Currently sitting on 5 wins in a row & shows 6 wins & a 2nd from his 7 lifetime starts.  Not bad at all!  Shares best closer award with #2 STRONGMAN HANOVER & #10 CENTURY LUCIFER, all with a 27 flat.  I’m assuming he’s ready to roll & connections are highly motivated to take home the winners share of the $50,200 purse money.

Race 9

4-5-1-6

(#4) REMEMBER THE ALAMO – has sure been a nice pick up for Ben Baillargeon & the rest of the ownership group.  Racing great and the team remains all together including driver Tyler Borth.  Obviously has great speed to grab the lead or at least good position & from usable form, his 26.4 adjusted closing quarter is only one tick back of PACINO HANOVER & his group best 26.3.  That one will have to prove he belongs with the Open types and that 1/5th of a second advantage is not enough when you are coming from well back & your competition (REMEMBER THE ALAMO) is also flashing big late speed while on the lead.  Nice to see BRUE HANOVER back at the track.  Could easily be dangerous at first asking but I hope he needs at least one.

Race 10

2-9-6-3

(#2) RBSTENACIOUS T – I could easily be backing #9 LYONS DUKEY in this spot with his group-best 26.4 closing quarter & McNair directing the show BUT Post 9 & a number of breaks look too risky to warrant top billing.  Instead, the Cullens seem to be developing another good one in RBSTENACIOUS T & his 27.2 from Nov 1 is 2nd best to the 9.  Post advantage too so this time its RBSTENACIOUS T.

Race 11

2-8-6-1-10

(#2) DRINKIN BUDDY – dropping a condition & picking up Doug McNair just for starters.  That 25.4 from Oct 18 adjusts to a 26.1 & that ties with #8 CAPTAIN HURLEY as the best for this bunch.  Its a good-looking group top to bottom so that 8-1 ML should go up making the reward worth taking a swing.

Most Likely: R8 – #4 FIGMENT

Value Play: R1 – #3 LOU WHO

Deep Crunch: R11 – #2 DRINKIN BUDDY
